Call for more investment in Crawley

CRAWLEY’S Labour Group has criticised recent cuts to youth service and called on the county council to increase investment in Crawley.

The West Sussex Life 2012 report includes figures which show that, in some parts of Crawley, youngsters were as much as 25 per cent below the national average when it came to development.

Cllr Chris Oxlade (Lab, Ifield) called the statistics “deeply worrying”.

He added: “The county council has pulled out of running nurseries in Crawley and is merging Pound Hill and Maidenbower Children’s and Family Centres but keeping the majority of centres open in Crawley.

“However, there has been a large reduction of staffing of these centres which will be to the detriment of those children and families who rely on the excellent work of the initiative.”

Cllr Oxlade said the rise in GCSE passes among Crawley students was “excellent news” but claimed there had been a 200 per cent rise in the long-term young unemployed in Crawley, calling in “a damning statistic”.

He added: “Young people in Crawley have endured the worse cuts and withdrawal of support over the last two years in living memory.

“Rather than the county council ploughing millions into vanity projects, like £1.5million into Chichester Festival Theatre, maybe it is time the county council invested in Crawley, giving us the fair deal we deserve.”
