Cancer patient to tackle half-marathon

A WOMAN facing her third bout of cancer treatment plans to complete a half-marathon to raise money for research into the disease.

Mum-of-two Linda Langdale, 54, will take on the Royal Parks Foundation half-marathon in Hyde Park, London, on October 7 in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Linda, of Horley, only got into running during her fight to keep fit after she fell ill. Since then she has taken part in Race for Life and a 10k run – but the half-marathon is a huge step up.

She said: “I thought well, I’ve done a 5k and a 10k and this is only double that, so I should at least have a go.”

Linda, mum to Freya, 21, and Rianna,18, was diagnosed with cancer in January 2007. She had what was thought to be a large ovarian cyst. She underwent a total hysterectomy and then discovered she had a very rare granulosa cell tumour for which there is no protocol of treatment.

In 2010, she developed, a tennis-ball sized tumour in her abdomen and underwent a second operation. Another tumour was found this year – this time in her pelvic area – and Linda is being closely monitored by specialists at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

She said: “It is disheartening to be facing my third bout of cancer but I feel fit and positive. My family has been touched by cancer quite a bit – both my parents and my grandfather and two of my husband’s sisters died of cancer, an uncle and another sister-in-law have also been affected.

“Thankfully I’ve had amazing support and encouragement from my husband Tom and my girls as well as other family and good friends who have helped get me through.

“Every month I donate to Cancer Research UK – I think it’s the best spend there is. Running for them also raises money and it helps keep me fit.”

Cancer Research UK will have around 550 runners taking part in the Royal Parks Foundation half marathon and hopes to raise more than £230,000.
