Changes made to Cabinet following councillor’s dismissal
Crawley councillor Duncan Crow
The leader of Crawley Borough Council has appointed Cllr Duncan Crow (Con, Furnace Green) to take over as Cabinet member for leisure and cultural services.
The announcement came following the dismissal of Cllr Lenny Walker (Con, Maidenbower) from the post after his allegations of bigotry and institutional racism within the council were deemed to have “unduly damaged” the reputation of it and its staff.
Council leader Cllr Bob Lanzer (Con, Pound Hill South & Worth) made the change today (Tuesday February 12) and also appointed Cllr Karl Williamson (Con, Southgate) to take over from Cllr Crow as Cabinet member for customer and corporate services.
Cllr Williamson will remain as vice-chair of the licensing committee until February 26. His successor will be appointed at a meeting of the full council on February 27.
A spokesman said Cllr Crow had been one of a cross-party group of councillors which had developed an early version of the council’s play strategy.
Cllr Walker, who will remain Conservative councillor for Maidenbower, insisted he had made no accusations of institutional racism but was “reiterating the views of staff” at the council who he said had no confidence in raising concerns “for fear of their jobs”.
