There will be a new face at the helm of Crawley Police next month after Chief Inspector Steve Curry announced that he was heading for pastures new.

CI Curry (pictured right) has been at the head of Crawley operations for four years and will take on a role in the corporate development department at police headquarters in Lewes.

His decision to leave has prompted a string of tributes.

At a meeting of the full council at the town hall on Wednesday (October 24), Cllr Brenda Smith (Lab, Langley Green) said: “I would like to thank Steve for the incredible amount of work he has done in this town.

“He has had four years here – which is longer than most. He could have moved on a while ago but wanted to stay to see through the work he had put into play.”

John Wright, chairman of Crawley Neighbourhood Watch, bemoaned the loss of CI Curry as “Lewes 1, Crawley 0”.

He added: “Steve Curry is the best divisional guy we’ve had. He is superb. He has been a stalwart of Neighbourhood Watch and the partnership between us has worked really well.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve and he is completely for the public. He’s compassionate and has helped us as individuals to bring the best out of us.”

Sussex Police has announced that CI Curry’s role will be filled by CI Justina Beeken, who was the Force’s lead for events surrounding the Olympic Games, Torch Relay and Paralympics.

Mr Wright added: “I’ve met with Justina a few times at events across Sussex and I know she will do well in Crawley.”
