Companies to let kids take over

COMPANIES and organisations across the county are being called on to sign up for Takeover Day 2012 and give young people first-hand experience of the world of work.

Organised by the Children’s Commissioner for England, Dr Maggie Atkinson, Takeover Day – Friday November 23 – will see children and young people head into work with adults where they will try everything from shadowing staff members to taking over the running of the business for a day.

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: “Children benefit from the opportunity to experience the world of work and make their voices heard, while adults and organisations gain a fresh perspective on what they do from young people.

“It could mean inviting young people to try out jobs, offer their perspective on key issues or being involved in decisions, job shadowing or taking charge of budgets.”

Cllr Peter Evans, county council Cabinet member for children and families was shadowed by three students from Forest Hill School.

He said: “Takeover Day is a good opportunity for all organisations and businesses.”

In a letter to businesses, Dr Atkinson said: “The day offers children and young people the chance to work with adults and get involved in decision-making.

“Organisations benefit too, gaining new ideas, insight and creativity to improve their services as well as the chance to show their commitment to listening to children and young people.”
