A COPTHORNE band is celebrating its 110th anniversary – making it one of the oldest in Sussex.

The Copthorne Silver Band was formed in 1902 when a rich benefactor brought a set of brass instruments for the villagers.

It all began when a gentleman named Mr Gladman moved to the village from Chichester and took up employment as a gardener.

Along with the help of local builder Mr Vigor and the band’s first president Mr John Cleese the trio managed to buy £300 worth of instruments.

The band then started its rehearsals in the village school.

Since that day the band has played frequently, only stopping for periods during the First and Second World War.

Through the years, the band has won many prizes and to this day is actively involved in the community attending fêtes and making appearances at the band stand.

To celebrate the 110 year, the band is holding a celebration concert at St Johns Parish Church in Copthorne.

Sheila Feasey, band secretary, said: “The picture (above) shows the band in 1926 and today it has a similar number of players of all ages who enjoy a variety of music ranging from film and show music to the traditional brass band marches and classical selections.

“Band members come from all walks of life and localities but with a common purpose to enjoy their music and support the community.

“They regularly take part in the Copthorne Scout and Guide Gang show and provide entertainment at village fetes and carnivals and bandstands, and carolling in the wider community.”

The celebration concert will be held on September 9 and starts at 3pm.

Tickets are £5 for adults, children are free.

You can purchase tickets from the Connell’s Estate Agent in Copthorne or from band treasurer Robert Feasey by calling 0771175094.

Donations will be collected at the event to support the work of St Catherine’s Hospice.

The band currently practices at the Delmer Morgan Centre.
