Landlords and their tenants are set to benefit from an improved deposit guarantee scheme from Crawley Borough Council.
The Crawley Deposit Service is a new and improved version of the council’s Rent Deposit Scheme (RDS), which was launched in 2005 and has recently been reviewed.
The changes will enable the council to better protect landlords’ properties and help private sector tenants to keep their tenancies for longer.
The council will continue to carry out checks on applicants to the scheme, something which landlords value. But since Monday (September 2), landlords will now manage the tenancy sign up, check in and check out inspections.
The council will then carry out visits a few weeks into a new tenancy to identify any potential tenancy issues as early as possible to support tenants in addressing these before they get out of control.
Landlords expressed dissatisfaction that they had to renew their Deposit Guarantee agreement alongside the tenancy agreement so the council has decided that the Deposit Guarantee will now last for the life of the tenancy.
Cllr Richard Burrett, cabinet member for Housing, said: “We’ve listened to landlords who told us what they wanted to see from the service.
“These important changes allow us to give experienced landlords the ability to carry out their business without too much council involvement, while ensuring that we’re still able to intervene where necessary.”
The new service will be offered to landlords for all tenancies starting after September 2. Existing RDS tenancies will continue to be managed under the RDS.
