Council reminder over tax discounts

Crawley Borough Council is reminding residents who claim a single person discount on council tax to let them know if their circumstances change.

In the next few weeks, the council will be taking part in a five-month county-wide initiative to check that people claiming the discount are living alone. Currently, some 14,000 people in Crawley claim the discount, which gives 25 per cent off their council tax bill.

A council spokesman pointed out that some people forget to declare changes or are unaware that they are supposed to do so.

Council leader Cllr Bob Lanzer said: “We want to make sure that the discount is being given to those who genuinely live alone so are asking people to let us know of changes in their circumstances.”

If your circumstances have changed, or you would like to check that you are receiving the correct benefit, discount or exemption, contact the council tax team on 01293 438616, email taxation@
