Council writes off debts
Crawley Borough Council has written off more than three quarters of a million pounds owed in business rates.
Some 51 cases dating back to 2008/09 and totalling £775,129.22 were approved for write-off by council leader Cllr Bob Lanzer (Con, Pound Hill South & Worth).
A council spokesman said the companies involved had either ceased trading with no assets, gone into liquidation, were in administration or had dissolved.
Rents totalling £6,570.43 and overpaid housing benefits totalling £8,776.85 were also written off.
In both cases the decision was made because the people involved were either deceased or their whereabouts were unknown.
The spokesman added: “The total written off this year is around £197,000 more than last year.”
