County council and police ranked in list of 100 best employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff

West Sussex County Council and Sussex Police have been ranked in an annual list of the best 100 employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff.

In the 2014 Stonewall Top Employers list announced yesterday (Wednesday January 15) The county council was ranked 64th out of 369 organisations. Sussex Police was 91st.

West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “This is very good news for the county council – having risen from 78th in last year’s rankings to 64 this year.

“The county council is committed to equalities, and we recognise that a diverse workforce in turn can help to improve the services we provide by offering differing skills, experiences, backgrounds and cultures.”

Deputy Chief Constable Giles York, Sussex Police lead for Equality & Diversity, said: “This is good news, it is vital that Sussex Police has a positive, inclusive working environment. I hope this result encourages even more lesbian, gay and bisexual people to consider working with us, so we can continue to better reflect the communities we serve.”

Since 2005 more than 750 employers have taken part in the index, using Stonewall’s criteria as a model for good practice.
