Crawley firefighters to host level crossing awareness day
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is joining forces with Network Rail and Sussex Police to host a special awareness day on Wednesday (October 24) to highlight the dangers of level crossing misuse in Crawley.
Crews from Crawley Fire Station, community safety officers from Network Rail and officers from Sussex Police will be at the crossings at Horsham Road and the High Street between 10am and 2pm in an effort to make motorists and pedestrians more aware of level crossings and to educate them on using them correctly.
Firefighters and safety officers will be chatting informally to residents about the risks they run if they misuse the crossings as well as giving out specially designed postcards challenging some of the commonly held misconceptions about level crossings and reinforcing the message that risking your life and the lives of others to save a few seconds is simply not worth it.
Crawley has one of the highest recorded levels of crossing misuse in Sussex - since May 2008 there have been over 100 incidences of misuse at the crossings. In 2009 and 2010 two people lost their lives on the crossings.
