Crawley Hospital gets clean bill of health in report

A report into care standards at Crawley Hospital has found patients are ‘very pleased’ with the quality of treatment they receive.

The findings, published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), said the hospital on West Green Drive, was meeting five key care standards and performing well.

The review was into non-emergency services provided at the hospital by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.

The results published on September 13 found patients were satisfied with treatments and procedures, and felt privacy, dignity and independence were respected by hospital staff.

The report showed patient satisfaction was at 95% in the hospital’s Day Surgery and Comet Ward.

One patient told inspectors the care they received was ‘excellent in all respects’.

Inspectors said the hospital was clean and hygienic but appeared ‘aged and tired’ in places.

The hospital was found to provide safe, appropriate care and was deemed to have satisfactory staffing levels which met patients health and welfare needs.

But patients said staff were ‘kept very busy.’

According to the report one patient told inspectors that ‘they would like staff to know how appreciated they are’.

The report found there was a low level of complaints at Crawley Hospital and all staff were trained to safeguard vulnerable adults.

The trust was also found to have ‘effective systems’ in place to assess and monitor the quality of its service and it ‘proportionately’ investigated all errors, implementing action plans to stop mistakes.

Inspectors looked at Comet Ward’s patients’ comments book. One comment read: ‘Staff give superb care; your service is second to none.’

Surrey and Sussex NHS Healthcare Trust and NHS Sussex both run services at the hospital. The report said the hospital needs to make it clearer which services are run by each trust as inspectors deemed it confusing for patients.

The report stated: “Crawley Hospital was meeting all the essential standards of quality and safety inspected. People spoken with during our visit were very pleased with the quality of care they received One person told us they felt lucky to have such a local facility.”

Chief Executive of The Trust Michael Wilson said: “ I can’t thank our staff enough for the care and attention they give to patients. What is even more remarkable, and shows just how incredible our staff are, is the way they responded in such a calm and efficient manner after the recent fire on Comet Ward which not only affected that ward but also our day surgery unit who were very hands on in helping to ensure the safety of patients and that services were resumed as quickly as possible. It is testament to their professionalism that we can provide such high quality services for our patients.”
