This is Joao Esteves, the 45-year-old Portuguese man who was murdered in Crawley by Daniel Palmer.

Mr Esteves came to Gatwick from Portugal on January 15 to look for work.

By January 19 he was dead.

Detective Chief Inspector Jason Taylor, who led the police investigation into the murder, said: “Mr Esteves was an innocent visitor to Sussex who had the misfortune to come across a violent thug who took his life.”

Jailing Palmer for life at Lewes Crown Court today (August 11) Judge Anthony Scott-Gall said: “What happened in the alleyway is a matter of conjecture but your story is a pack of lies.

“You committed this quite dreadful crime, where you killed a vulnerable, sad man.”

See Wednesday’s Crawley Observer for a full report.
