An all star-star lineup of musicians will play a benefit concert after the parents of two punk-band members died at Catherine’s Hospice.
Proceeds from the show will be shared between the hospice and a foundation set up to support young musicians in memory of late frontman of The Clash Joe Strummer.
The gig will be headlined by Crawley country three-piece Society who recently recorded a live session for BBC Radio 2 veteran Bob Harris.
Society will be joined by songwriter-guitarist Mike Dobie, from Pease Pottage, new wave punk band the Water Pistols, from Horley, Broadfield rapper Danny Dangerously, and metal outfit Leah of Crows, also from Broadfield.
The idea came about after Mike Dobie and the Water Pistols’ Neil Warner met playing a gig at the Gatwick Arms in Horley. The pair wanted to commemorate the ten-year anniversary of Strummer’s death while helping St Catherine’s Hospice, a cause close to Neil’s heart.
Neil, who played in Cure-supporting Lefaye, said: “It’s been a bit of nightmare year for the band. My mum passed away at St Catherine’s in July and the other member’s dad passed away there in May. So it’s our way of giving something back and recognising the great work they do there.”
Meanwhile the Strummerville charity foundation was set up by Joe Strummer’s family to support musicians in Britain and beyond.
Mike Dobie said despite Strummer’s death the appeal of his music and politics endured with musicians young and old. He said: “I think it’s unbelievable that young people still want to get involved in what Joe was all about. The Clash were constantly trying to make a change for the better and they certainly meant it. Anybody starting a band can’t go too wrong looking at them as a reference.”
A 1978 Clash gig at Crawley Leisure Centre was gatecrashed by rioting skinheads, fans said.
The charity concert, called A Gig For Joe, is at the Wingspan Club, Whitworth Road, County Oak, on February 16 2013.
