Crawley shop assistant fined £80 for serving drunk man cider

A SHOP assistant was given a £80 fixed penalty notice for serving a drunk man a can of cider.

a 41-year-old man, who had been drinking, was served at the Handy Corner shop in East Park, Southgate, served on Wednesday (May 9).

Sergeant Nev Whiteley advised the man to go home moments before he was served alcohol.

The officer issued the fine to a 37-year-old shop staff member for selling to a person who had been drinking.

Sergeant Whiteley said: “Selling alcohol to drunks is unacceptable as it can have a direct impact on behaviour in communities. We do work in partnership with the local authority over licensed premises and most are very co-operative and responsible. However this was a blatant offence where I had to take immediate action.”

Police will also be taking the matter up with the management of the shop.
