The revamp will see the footway between Pegler Way and The Boulevard made into a 4m wide path for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Crawley Borough Council scheme will also create toucan crossings and convert a path along The Boulevard from The Tree - where the Museum of Crawley will move to - to Crawley Police Station.

A Crawley Labour spokesman said the works will be funded by developers as part of planning agreements.

Cllr Peter Smith, cabinet member for Planning and Economic Development, who revealed the plans in June 2015, explained Morrisons agreed to pay for the High Street scheme and the council would incur no capital costs.

He said: “The footpaths in parts of the town centre have been allowed to deteriorate badly over the years by the responsible authority, West Sussex County Council, and are long overdue some repair and refurbishment.

“This project will deliver these repairs and improvements as well as converting the paths to shared use between pedestrians and cyclists.

“As a regular cyclist myself I am pleased that the town is doing more, under a Labour-run council, to encourage people to walk and cycle and I very much welcome this further investment in our town centre.”
