Cycle path scheme prioritised
A CYCLE path scheme which will double up as a restricted parking zone along Worth Park Avenue has been prioritised by councillors, a meeting heard.
Two new pedestrian crossings and two traffic management schemes will also be prioritized for 2013/14.
The measures were part of an infrastructure plan put forward by county councillors at the East Crawley County Local Committee, at Crawley Library on Tuesday (January 17).
The proposals include a signalised pedestrian crossing on Hazelwick Avenue, near the passage to Pondwood Road; the removal of chicanes from Station Hill, Billinton Drive and Matthews Drive; traffic management on Church Road; and a pedestrian crossing on Turners Hill Road, in Pound Hill Hill/Worth.
Bob Lanzer, county councillor for Maidenbower, said: “This will be a major step in the build-up of our cycle network, while also having the affect of bringing in automatic parking restrictions along Worth Park Avenue.
“We are aware of that the cycle network doesn’t always link up. It takes a fair amount of time but this must be a positive step.”
Gordon Easden, of Crawley Cycle Forum, said: “We’re delighted that this scheme is going ahead. It builds on all the improvements made throughout the town to the cycle network.
“Hopefully it will go some way towards realising the Forum’s ultimate goal of a fully integrated cycle network in Crawley.”
The cycle path must be designed and costed and if approved will become part of the integrated works programme for 2013/14.
Parking restriction works at Allyington Way, Balcombe Road and Street Hill, in Worth were put on hold following late objections from residents.
Meanwhile a traffic regulation order was agreed while Furnace Green Parade and carpark is redeveloped.
A formal consultation will be launched into a controlled parking zone (CPZ) in Pound Hill with amendments in Cobbett Close, Milton Mount Avenue, St Mary’s Drive and Worth Park Avenue.
Councillors also agreed to grant funding of £440 to Crawley Community Transport for staff uniform; £222 to 4SIGHT for learning packs; £1,111 to Crawley Wellbeing for a one-off Tilgate Park run; and £2,666 towards educational workshops at Crawley Festival.
