Daredevils abseiled 110ft down the side of the Sofitel Hotel at Gatwick Airport on Sunday (March 3) to raise money for charity.

The abseil was raising funds for Home-Start CHAMS (Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex) which helps support families where people are finding it difficult to cope with bringing up a young family.

Around 45 people made the journey down the side of the hotel including staff and volunteers from the charity.

The event has so far raised £5,000 and there are still donations coming in, which the charity hopes will help reach its target of £8,000.

Aimee Wiggins, fundraising manager for Home-Start CHAMS, who also took part in the abseil, said: “It was really good. The day couldn’t have been more brilliant if we had tried.

“We had 45 people take part in the abseil for us and the weather was okay for us as well.

“The Sofitel hotel couldn’t have been more accommodating. We are now waiting for people to collect money after the event and we are expecting about £5000 so far.

“We are well on our way towards our target of £8,000. We are really pleased. I know a couple of people have raised £1,000 and have just got to collect it now.

“I took part in the abseil. I have done it once before, and it was definitely worse the second time around!

“I know the abseil guys from when I did it before and they were like ‘Aimee has to go first!’ And so they made me go first! It was really scary, but it was okay. All you can think about is, I am about to step off a tall hotel backwards.

“We had a really mixed bag of people and everybody did it, it was brilliant.”
