Daring Crawley climber completes rare feat

A DARING Crawley climber has completed a never-before-attempted climb of a South Pacific peak.

Steve Beckwith, 24, of Mattheys Place, scaled a sheer pillar known as the Dragon's Horn' off the coast of Malaysia - and found it to be as fearsome as it's name sounds.

Former Hazelwick pupil Steve said he thought he had 'died and was in purgatory' during six days spent on the vertical cliff face.

At one point his companion, American Matt Travers, was left hanging by his harness when he fell 30 feet after a rope anchor gave way.

The pair were only the second team to ever scale the pillar and followed a previously uncharted route.

Speaking from from Kuala Lumpar, he said: "I think the predominant emotion felt on the summit by Matt and myself was relief.

"It is an amazing feeling to climb on rock that has never been touched by anyone and see the views that no other person has seen and as that sinks in our relief turns more to joy."
