Deaf Ian on daring polar expedition
A DEAF man from Crawley is heading to the South Pole as part of daring expedition.
Ian Berry, 42, will join a team of four dare-devils led by a record-setting polar expert Mike Thornewill to complete 'Shackleton's Unfinished Journey', the first ever attempt to reach the South Pole circa 1909.
To celebrate the centenary anniversary of the expedition, Ian, who lives in Maidenbower, will set off at the point at which explorer Ernest Shackleton and his team turned back, 115 statute miles short of the South Pole.
The expedition to the South Pole is part of Ian's mission to reach both Poles as an ambassador for the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS), a charity which transforms lives of deaf children and deaf young people in the UK.
The IT specialist took part in the famous North Pole trek in April 2008, which saw for the first time a group of deaf and hearing people reaching the Arctic Circle and tackling communication challenges along the way.
