Staff and patients of a doctors’ surgery damaged by storms believe it could take ‘weeks if not months’ to get service back to normal.
Leacroft Medical Practice in Langley Green was hit by the storm on December 23.
A flat roof was severely damaged on the four-year-old buidling and a temporary roof was still not in place last week.
Michael Grey, a member of the Leacroft patients’ support group, said: “It was horrendous when I first saw it. Obviously there’s no electrics, there’s no telephone system.
“The water came all the way through the building. You can see it everywhere in there. It’s not just a question of fixing the roof. The roof is only part of it.”
Partner Dr Haidar Saad said staff got to work straight away to help.
“All the partners came in an rescued the computers, patient records and our staff CVs. We had two temporary locations to run services from. Southgate Medical and Crawley Hospital. We started working the next day.
“We are one of the surgeries which has one of the highest elderly populations, so many are not on the internet. We told the pharmacies, churches, the local mosque, the local temple to give them the mobile number.
“Our staff are working flexibly and we are updating all the relevant parties.”
“We’ve found out this is going to take weeks, if not months.
“The temporary roof still isn’t on. According to the scaffolders it will be on next week. Water is still coming in.”
Pat Champion of the patients’ group at Leacroft praised the work of the partners. She said: “The partners, practice management and staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that the patients have suffered the minimum of inconvenience.
“They have been working under extremely difficult conditions and are providing as many of the normal facilities as is humanly possible, given they are working out of two centres with the minimum of resources. Their dedication has been truly amazing. We cannot praise them highly enough for all the efforts they are putting in to ensure the needs of the patients are being met.”
Leacroft has the use of Southgate Medical Group in Brighton Road until the end of January. A short term surgery is also being held at Crawley Hospital in West Green, although a more long term temporary base is needed. The surgery has a mobile number - 07955 201847 - for patients to call between 8am and 6.30pm. See www.leacroft.co.uk for updates.
