Don your specs and take part in ‘selfie’ campaign

Spectacle wearers have been called on to help a Crawley charity raise more than £2,000 in just five days.

Vision Aid Overseas (VAO), a charity in Manor Royal which works to improve eye care in poor countries, has set up a social media campaign which will run from May 12 to 16.

Optical specialist Eyesite has pledged to donate £1 to the charity every time someone posts a ‘selfie’ of them wearing glasses, on Twitter or Facebook, with the hash tag #VisionWeek.

People wishing to donate an extra £3 to the cause can also text ‘VAO’ to 70300.

Vision Aid Overseas development director Jeremy Jalie said: “This type of campaign is immediate and visible and absolutely anyone can get involved – it’s a great way to support what we do,

“Not only can we be transparent about our fund raising – people can see exactly how much is being pledged and why those funds will make a big difference – but it’s also a way for our supporters to directly engage with the charity, which is very important for us.”

VAO is currently improving eye care in six countries in Africa by installing vision centres, training eye-care workers and conducting research into eye health issues.
