Elderly woman’s savings stolen in Crawley town centre

AN elderly woman had her savings stolen by a thief just moments after withdrawing it from a bank in Crawley.

Police said the woman withdrew £1,025 from Lloyds TSB on the Broadway and put it in an envelope before zipping it up in a black shopping bag.

She walked with members of her family to Wilkinsons and then the Oriental Emporium in the High Street at about 2.30pm on 30 August.

However, when she went to pay she found a hole in her bag and the money missing.

Police believe the hole was made with a Stanley knife blade or similar and after viewing CCTV have identified a man they would like to speak to.

He is described as Asian, in his 30s, with receding dark hair and about 5ft 9. He was wearing grey trousers, blue trainers and a black jacket which had a leather type section across the shoulders and two horizontal stripes along the bottom waistband.

PC Thomas Hawkins said:”This man was seen to stand near the victim in Lloyds and was shown to enter Wilkinsons immediately after her, watching her as she made her way around the shop. We are keen to trace him to eliminate him from our enquiries. Anyone who recognises him or witnessed any suspicious activity is urged to contact police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
