Events to raise awareness of dementia
THE Alzheimer’s Society will be holding an event in the town centre to raise awareness of dementia in Crawley.
The event, in Queens Square on Thursday (May 24) from 10am-1pm will be part of Dementia Awareness Week (May 20-26) and will see groups, professionals, organisations and charities from Crawley offering their support.
A Dementia Awareness Day has been organised for May 25.
The event, organised by West Sussex County Council, West Sussex Age UK, the Alzheimer’s Society, North and Mid Sussex Carers Support Service and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, will run from 10.30am-2.30pm at Age UK Redwood
Centre, Perrymount Rd, Haywards Heath.
Guests will be able to learn more about dementia, talk to local support groups, professionals and charities and develop their skills through a series of workshops.
County Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “Raising the profile of Alzheimer’s and dementia in the county is a priority for me as part of West Sussex County Council’s Age with Confidence initiative.
“We know that numbers of sufferers will rise in West Sussex over the coming decades and we know that there are gaps in provision, which we are addressing.
“There is provision for Alzheimers Society dementia advisors in the plans for memory assessment clinics, and once this is implemented, which we hope will be soon, everyone who passes through the service (and their carers) will be able to access ongoing support, information and signposting.
“We anticipate that this will close the current gap in provision of Alzheimer’s Society support.”
