Factfile: Run Young Lovers

A group of former Hazelwick pupils are hoping to make their big break into the world of music when they release their first single on November 5.

Run Young Lovers have previously given away their work as free downloads and their latest song, As Honest As You Are Pretty – a bittersweet tale of love and hate –will only cost fans 79p on iTunes and Spotify.

The group – Jack Betteridge on vocals, James Reffold on drums , Lloyd Stone on guitar, James Ellis on guitar and Ollie Small on bass – are all aged between 21 and 24.

They have already built up a loyal and enthusiastic fanbase – described by James Reffold as “the best” – who follow them to gigs in London and Brighton as well as one memorable evening when they packed out the now closed Bar Med.

Previously known as Us and Them, the indie/rock lads have tried to make their sound more radio friendly and were featured on BBC Radio London’s Introducing segment, which describes itself as bringing listeners the “latest unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar talent”.

The progress Run Young Lovers have made in the past year has them champing at the bit to make their name big time.

James Reffold said: “RYL have achieved so much this year, which is both overwhelming and yet still the start for us, which we are very, very proud of and excited!”

James said that the next big step for the lads would be to sign up with a manager.

He added: “We haven’t signed up yet but we’ve had quite a bit of interest – but we need to keep working as we’re new.”

Crawley’s was once famous for its thriving music scene and that’s something that RYL would like to rekindle.

James said: “Because Crawley does not have that live music scene, people look at us as a hobby band. We’re proud to be from Crawley and we really want to be seen as a band that is trying hard to get somewhere.

“If things keep going like this we will be sure to make something of Crawley when it comes to live music.”

And when asked where he and the band would like to be in a year’s time, James has an immediate answer.

He said: “By next summer we would like to be appearing on some of the smaller stages at some of the big festivals.”
