Organisers of a summer fair were left exhausted but delighted after the event raised more than £1,000.

The sun shone for the Friary Pre-School, in Southgate, as they attempted to make the first inroads into the £80,000 needed to rebuild their hut.

Crawley musicians such as The Rollos, Paul and Mike Stanworth and Leah Sheridan took to the stage on Saturday (July 12) to entertain visitors while children enjoyed funfair rides and a visit from firefighters.

Joining his fellow musicians was Zack Godden, who has made a name for himself around Sussex due to his guitar skills and impressive voice.

Organiser Shamilla Sheridan said she was amazed to learn Zack had been a pupil at the pre-school when he was a tot.

Shamilla, who is already turning her attention to the next fundraiser, described herself as “over the moon but very tired”.

She said: “We couldn’t have asked for things to go better. The bands were absolutely fantastic.”

She also thanked Pauline Payne, Asda Community Life Champion, for her help in organising the fair.

Explaining why the pre-school needed to rebuild, she said: “We can only use one side of the building. The other side is not usable.

“It’s just such a shame because it’s a lovely size and we have a waiting list of two years.”

As for the next fundraising event, Shamilla said there were plans for a 26-mile walk as well as a concert.
