Find your 'flu friends'

WEST Sussex Primary Care Trust is urging people to find their 'Flu Friends'.

As the number of new confirmed cases of swine flu continues to rise across the UK, it says now is the time to identify those who could help you if you become unwell.

A PCT spokeswoman said: "Your Flu Friends could be relatives, neighbours and friends who will be able to collect medicines, food and other supplies for you if you get swine flu, so that you don't have to leave your home. This will help to prevent the spread of flu out into the community.

"Your Flu Friends should be people who live relatively close to you and be people that you would be happy to share your personal health details with."

Currently if you become unwell with flu like symptoms, you should contact your GP who will decide if antiviral medication is required.

If it is, they will talk you through the process, agree the closest site to you which stocks the antiviral medication, provide a letter of request to staff at that site, and then one of your Flu Friends should go to there and pick up your medication.

Anyone suffering from flu like symptoms should stay at home and not go out to pick up the medication themselves.

If you become unwell with flu like symptoms, and are concerned you do not have a Flu Friend, please highlight this to your GP when you speak to them on the phone.

They will be able to advise you about alternative arrangements that are in place for people with no family or friends locally.
