‘Forgotten casualties of war’ - Dog Sylvie to be flown 4000 miles to new home
Sylvie was rescued from Afghanistan by Ifield couple
A dog will have a new home when she is flown 4,000 miles from a war zone in Afghanistanafter being rescued by an Ifield couple.
Sarah Dowdall said as soon as she locked eyes on Sylvie’s face, after searching on dog charity Nowzad’s Facebook page, she didn’t paws for thought and set about bringing her to the UK.
Sylvie (pictured) was picked up by Nowzad, which cares for more than 100 cats and dogs trying to survive on the streets in the war torn country, 18 months ago after she was spotted struggling with a broken leg.
She was in very poor condition but was nursed back to health by the shelter and when the charity started looking for a home in the UK for her, Sarah and her partner Phil were the first to snap her up.
Sarah said: “We are very excited about her arrival. We cannot wait to meet her and introduce her to her new home and family! We know it will not be easy for her at first, there will be lots of things she has never seen or experienced but we cannot wait to rise to the challenge and help her adjust to her new comfortable life.
“I first found out about Nowzad a couple of years ago when my friend who is in the Army was serving over in Afghanistan and befriended a dog. We wanted to rescue that dog but for a number of reasons, it did not happen.Since then I have quite avidly followed and supported Nowzad’s efforts and think they do an amazing job.
“Nowzad were looking for a home in the UK for Sylvie as, although she was not a Soldier’s rescue, she was loved very much by the staff in the shelter. They wanted to see her in a safe home in the UK. She is on her way to me in early February.”
