When staff at Manor Royal delivery firm UK Mail received a cash community award from O2, they could have purchased the new TV they had been eyeing.

But, instead, the kind-hearted crew handed over £1,250 to St Catherine’s Hospice, in Malthouse Road, Southgate.

On Thursday December 20, site manager Nigel Powell joined company mascot Parcel Pete at the Kelvin Way depot to hand over a cheque to Jenna Durdle, from the hospice.

Nigel said: “The staff could have had a new TV but we decided to give the money to St Catherine’s because they do such good work.”

Jenna added: “This was very kind of them and very generous of the staff to choose to make the donation to the hospice.

“We will not restrict the money to a specific area. It will be used where needed.”

The award was presented to UK Mail after members of staff helped identify a mobile phone fraud to police earlier in the year.

A spokesman for O2 said: “As a result of the actions of the team at UK Mail’s Crawley depot, we’re pleased to present them with an ‘I Made A Difference’ award.

“This is a scheme we offer to our Supply Chain Partners, rewarding their staff who’ve been nominated for operational excellence and for going the extra mile with their service.”

The early Christmas gift went down well with hospice staff, who spent a busy festive season taking care of patients.

Siobhan Meaker, PR and communications manager, said that some 92 nursing staff were on duty throughout Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day providing 740 hours of care.

On Christmas Day, 50 patients and their visitors tucked into a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and each patient received a drinks’ miniature and a box of chocolates with their roast.

Siobhan said it cost in the region of £130,000 to care for patients and families across Mid Sussex and East Surrey over the 12 days of Christmas, and added: “These little touches are all part of what makes hospice care so special.”
