‘Good’ grade for Crawley kids’ club

Staff at an after school and holiday club have worked together to improve its Ofsted rating.

The Cosmic Club, based at Cranbrook Independent Nursery and Preschool, in Maidenbower, received a ‘good’ grade in its report, published on April 17.

The previous inspection - in 2010 - said the club ‘requires improvement’.

Louise Ashby, 37, club manager, said the improvement was due to hard team work and listening to children’s ideas.

She said: “It’s hard now, to actually get a grade up. They seem to be grading people down rather than up so we are very proud of what we’ve achieved.”

Louise became manager of the club just a month after the previous inspection took place.

The club caters to 32 children aged between five and 12, and a wide range of activities are required to keep all children entertained.

Louise added: “The five-year-old children are more interested in playing with sand and water and the 12-year-olds are more interested in chilling out with friends and enjoying each others’ company.

“The children have a lot of input as well and we’ll implement their ideas.”

The Ofsted inspectors agreed that staff worked effectively and made the children feel valued.

Their report said: “Staff form strong, positive relationships with children which makes them feel secure, safe and valued.

“Staff have a good understanding of different stages of development and use this to adapt their behaviour management strategies according to the age of the child. This results in children being well behaved. “

Louise said the club takes the children out on a range of day trips which often had educational value.

During the Easter holidays they enjoyed a day at Holmbush Farm, where they were taught how to make butter.

The Ofsted report noted the that “the range of activities available to children complements their learning in school.”

The club was told, to improve further it could extend children’s learning during routine tasks, such as by involving children more when setting up for tea time.
