STAFF from the new Wilkinson store in town swapped their tills for shovels and spent four hours weeding and gardening for St Catherine’s Hospice.

The group rolled up their sleeves and tidied up the hospice’s gardens, on Malthouse Road, marking the start of a year long partnership between the charity and the store.

The hospice was recently selected to be the Crawley store’s charity of the year and team members have pledged to support St Catherine’s over the next 12 months with fundraising and volunteering activities.

Store manager, Barry Holden, said: “St Catherine’s Hospice is an organisation that is very close to the hearts of people in Crawley, as it has provided vital free end of life care to local people for nearly 30 years, touching thousands of families.

“Wilkinson is committed to supporting worthwhile local charities and this activity marks the start of our partnership with this fantastic organisation. The team loved helping out at the hospice and refreshing the grounds for staff, residents and their families to enjoy.

“I am certain that the relationships my team members are building with each other and with the team at St Catherine’s, will prove invaluable in creating a hardworking team that is dedicated to serving and supporting the local community in Crawley.”

Jenna Durdle, corporate fundraiser for St Catherine’s Hospice, added: “Each year we need to raise £5 million so we can continue to provide our much-needed care.

“It has been great to have the support of team members from Wilkinson’s already and we are really looking forward to working with the team over the next 12 months to help us to continue our vital work.”

A group of team members from the store will also compete against 30 other businesses in the St Catherine’s 10th annual Dragon Boat Festival at Tilgate Park on Sunday (September 2). The money raised will also go to St Catherine’s Hospice.
