Volunteers running the Maidenbower Community Club are appealing for people with a range of skills to join them on the committee.

The Pavilion in Maidenbower Park was the changing rooms for sports clubs for years until Crawley Borough Council fully refurbished it.

It now houses Stepney’s cafe and more recently the community club, which opened last year. The club is run by a committee of volunteers who do everything from serving in the bar to co-ordinating bookings for the hall. On Tuesday January 21 at 7.30pm they are holding an information evening to tell people how they can get involved in helping the club’s success continue.

Founding committee member Nicola Smith said: “I am working, running the club and doing sometimes 100 hours a week to keep the club running.

“It would never close down. I love what I do and the community love us being here. People offer to work behind the bar, but there’s more to it than that.”

Cllr Ken Trussell (Con, Maidenbower) explained the ethos of the club. He said: “We have done this in other wards where we get volunteers from the community. The council isn’t a company.

“If we take things like the K2. The council doesn’t run it; a company does. It’s not community based. The committee runs the community club and defines what it does.”

They are looking for people with a variety of skills and experience including, but not limited to book-keeping, secretarial work and fundraising.

Anyone who intends to go to the event next week is asked to email Nicola on nicola.smith0512@googlemail.com or call her on 07914 338824.
