Hindu centre gets civil ceremony licence

Apple Tree Centre

Apple Tree Centre

A religious centre has become the first non-Christian place in Sussex to be granted a licence to conduct civil ceremonies.

This means couples can legally register their marriage, conduct their religious vows and hold their reception all under one roof.

The Apple Tree Centre Gurjar Hindu Union, in Ifield, is welcoming couples of all religions and genders to hold their weddings at the centre.

Apple Tree trustee Brarat Lukka said: “It’s open to absolutely anyone. We have a state-of-the-art venue, gardens at the back for pictures and a beautiful place of worship.”

The three-year-old centre also has a large reception venue and a facility to cook vegetarian food.

Mr Lukka said: “This open doors for us and helps us integrate with the community which is fantastic.

“We have a care group who come in and use the centre, sports guys and neighbourhood watch group - we’ve even had a Christmas party.”

The banqueting suite has capacity for 1,000 guests and with 250 free car-parking spots. Couples can bring in their own caterers and affordable rates are available for weekday events, including religious festivals. For bookings call Bharat Lukka on 07967339790 or email bharatlukka@hotmail.com.
