Historic Hazelwick Road could be turned into conservation area

Hazelwick Road in Three Bridges could be made into a conservation area and help protect it from over development.

Crawley Borough Council has launched a public consultation into designating the area after a report in 2010 by Alan Baxter Associates found some areas of Crawley were worthy of listed status, including Hazelwick Road.

It means the area is of special historic and architectual importance and is worthy of being preserved and enhanced.

It will also help guide developers and ensure the character of the road is not lost.

Cllr Brenda Burgess (Con, Three Bridges) welcomed the proposal.

She said: “I think that any conservation area is good for the town.

“ I think it shows the history of the town.

“It shows the direction the town has come from and where it is going to, and I think it is nice to keep a historical area in tact.”

Crawley’s heritage is being reviewed as part of the Local Plan which outlines housing development until 2029.

The road is of special historical interest because it comprises of a number of semi-detached and terrace houses where working class railway workers lived, and is therefore associated with the opening of Three Bridges Railway Station in 1841. Three Bridges became an important railway junction when in 1848 a branch line was added to Horsham and Portsmouth and in 1855 another branch line to East Grinstead was added.

Hazelwick Road illustrates the Victorian expansion of Three Bridges associated with the construction of the railway and a major junction.

The proposal reads: “This variety of building typology and detailing such as historic shopfronts is of architectural value. Although some sash windows have been replaced, the street is of sufficient historic and architectural interest in the Crawley context to merit conservation area designation.”
