Housing cash boost delight
CRAWLEY Borough Council could be millions of pounds better off after a Government minister revealed local authorities may be allowed to keep all the rent they collect.
Housing Minister John Healey MP unveiled plans to allow councils freedom to manage their housing to meet local needs.
He will consult with councils before the summer on proposals for councils to become self-financing and free to manage the needs of their housing stock as well as provide more efficient services for their tenants.
No timescale has been given for when a new scheme may be introduced.
A Crawley Borough Council statement said 13.2 million (41 per cent) of Crawley tenants' rent money was paid to the Government last year. This year the figure rises to 14.6 million.
