“Hi doc, I have an enlarged prostate, I am quite worried as the frequency of urine has increased, I am getting up a lot at night, feeling stressed and tired too. I have been recommended various operations by my GP to resolve this; please can you help and tell me the best way I can get it sorted? Is there an effective treatment available at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital?” Thanks, Phil, West Green.

It is part of the ageing process for the prostate gland to enlarge. This may cause obstruction to the flow of urine and difficulty emptying the bladder.

Men complain of having to pass water more frequently with disturbed sleep.

Your GP should check for prostate cancer with a blood test (PSA). If you symptoms are affecting your everyday life and particularly if you are tired during the day due to lack of sleep, you should have treatment. This can be a tablet which helps you to pass water more easily. Unfortunately this may only help for a short time.

An operation may be necessary, but new technology using a laser makes this a simple procedure.

At Spire Gatwick Park we were one of the first hospitals to use the Holmium laser which is now common practice in the UK. Men recover very quickly after one night stay and are able to go back to work the following week. They can then pass urine with a much improved stream and able to get a good night’s sleep!
