An author has published an book about the cultural history of oak. Peter Young (pictured), 82, from Pound Hill, had his new book called ‘Oak’ published on Thursday (February 28) and it has already received orders in America.
The freelance journalist explained how he spent a year putting together the 40,000 word book with 88 illustrations.
He said: “It was a jolly interesting subject to research. I spoke to friends and they were very helpful at coming up with bits and pieces. There was an enthusiasm for it that spread.
“All the influence it had in British history. Oak ships defended the country. It has had appearances in art and literature, folk tales, myths. It was worshiped by Pagan society and used to make the electric chair.” The book can be bought in hardback at Waterstones or as an e-book at www.amazon.co.uk
