Joy as youth wing re-opens

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Oriel Youth Wing from closure were celebrating this week after discussions between the school and county council bore fruit.

Evening youth provision at the Maidenbower school looked set to end after funding cuts by West Sussex County Council but students and supporters took to social media site Facebook on Monday (September 10) to announce that the evening sessions would be relaunched from next Tuesday (September 18) under the management of the school.

Cllr Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council Cabinet member for children and families, said: “The Youth Support and Development Service has been working closely with Oriel High School about the planned changes, and over the summer has come to an agreement which will see the school take over the management of the youth wing including the weekly Tuesday session.

“I am extremely pleased that a positive outcome has been reached which will provide all young people in the area with continued use of the centre. The Youth Support and Development Service will continue to support the session over the next six weeks.

“This support is just one element of the planned transition of the youth wing to Oriel High School. Following this, the Youth Support and Development Service will continue to work closely with the school to offer targeted and specialist services for those young people in most need.”

Oriel headteacher Philip Stack said the school eventually hoped to open for three evenings a week but cautioned that it was still early days and that discussions were ongoing.

He added: “There’s been a lot of negotiation and hard work. We’ve always been pleased and proud of the youth work carried out in our area and we will step in as best we can.

“We’re not trying to replace the work done by the youth service but some of the provision that our students particularly enjoyed we hope to provide for our youngsters and those in the area.”
