Jubilation at school’s Ofsted report success

Staff and pupils at a Three Bridges school are celebrating possibly its ‘best Ofsted report ever’ after being taken out of special measures.

Pupils spilled out on to Three Bridges Junior School’s playground on Thursday (October 22) waving a banner heralding the school’s name after inspectors rated the school as ‘good.’

The school, on Gales Drive, was given the lowest possible mark of ‘inadequate’ in January 2011 after inspectors found the school was ‘failing to give an acceptable standard of education.’

The school was regularly monitored by Ofsted but inspectors were so impressed with the school’s progress, its September monitoring report turned into a full inspection and was published this week.

The report said standards of education at the school had improved, there was ‘consistently good teaching’ and pupils behaviour is now good.

Yasmin Ashraf, took over as headteacher in September 2011. She was praised for her leadership at the school. She said: “I am really proud of the staff at my school and pleased with the way they embraced the changes that needed to be made in order to provide the best possible learning opportunities for pupils to make good progress. To be out of special measures as a good school is something I am especially pleased about, as it is recognition of the hard work everyone, including the children, has put in. However, we are not complacent and we realise that while this is a fantastic step forward, there are still issues to address. We are closely monitoring children’s work to ensure that standards continue to rise.”

Chair of Governors Kathy Southall added: “This is the best Ofsted grading the school has been given since before 1999, possibly ever.”

Teachers are now looking towards preparing for the upcoming consultation into the merger between the junior school and Three Bridges Infant School to form an ‘all through’ primary school.

West Sussex County Council said the consultation was due to begin on Friday (October 26).
