Last chance to have a say on Crawley’s local plan

The final stage of consultation on Crawley’s development over the next 15 years starts tomorrow (Monday, September 1).

Crawley 2030 is 169 pages long and has been developed with feedback from residents, businesses and other stakeholders over three previous stages of consultation.

Councillor Peter Smith, member for planning and economic development, said: “This is the last chance for residents to have their say on our draft local plan before it is examined by a planning inspector.

“So if you’re interested in the future sustainable development of Crawley please get in touch and take part in this stage of consultation.

“The council is making arrangements for independent help to be made available to assist residents to submit comments and details will be released shortly.”

The draft submission local plan includes:

Allocation of 4,895 new homes in Crawley between 2015 and 2030 – approximately half of these will be in Forge Wood;

Retention of the current requirement of 40 per cent affordable housing in all residential schemes, subject to viability – where viability allows, low cost housing will also be sought on developments of 15 homes or more;

Encouragement of retail and residential use in the town centre;

Designation of Ifield Brook Meadows and Rusper Road Playing Fields as local green spaces.

According to the statement, Crawley Borough Council’s vision for Crawley in 2030 is: “A modern, vibrant town that stands proud of its achievements and uses its strengths to reach its potential.

“Its strong and diverse communities, neighbourhood structure, sustainable economic growth and excellent connections within and beyond the region will make it a place that people enjoy and want to live, work and visit.”

The local plan contains strategic planning policies and principles which will be used in the consideration of planning applications.

The consultation, which runs until 5pm on October 13, is for residents, businesses and stakeholders to make formal representations on any policy or allocation in the local plan.

A spokesman for the council said: “Comments must be based on whether you consider the plan to comply with legal requirements, the duty to cooperate and whether the plan is sound.”

All responses will go to a planning inspector appointed by the secretary of state.

The inspector is expected to hold a public examination in March or April next year and the council anticipates receiving the inspector’s report in July.
