Making a Difference is the theme for this year’s Local Newspaper Week, which runs this week (May 12-18).
To mark this special event, Johnston Press is running videos on all of its newspapers’ websites, which span the whole country, showcasing local people that really make a difference in their communities.
There are so many worthy charities in West Sussex and thousands of residents that give up their time, unpaid, to help others.
The Crawley Observer has chosen to feature Maria Hains, arguably Crawley’s best-known and most prolific fundraiser.
Maria estimates she has raised more than £300,000 over 35 years.
The 70-year-old mother-of-three lives in Three Bridges and is married to John. She has been the driving force behind fundraising drives for Crawley Hospital and St Catherine’s Hospice.
She was also chosen to carry the Olympic Torch on one leg of its journey through Sussex in 2012.
