Man takes on first run for the charity that support him

A man with Downs Syndrome is preparing for his first 5k run to raise money for the charity that supports him.

Brendan Crookes, 31, from Ifield, will complete the run at Tilgate Park, in Crawley, on Saturday (February 23) with the aim to raise at least £200 for Outreach 3 Way, a Sussex support provider for people with learning disabilities.

Brendan’s training began about six months ago and consisted of aerobic training using a stationary bike, cross trainer and the treadmill.

This training was set up by Outreach 3 Way’s Out There! sports and leisure programme, which offers a wide range of community activities across Sussex.

He chose to do the run because he was inspired by other people taking on similar challenges and being active. The money raised will go towards the running of services provided by Outreach 3 Way.

Bob Leeves runs the Out There! programme and trains with Brendan,

Bob said: “Brendan has enjoyed the training, although it has been hard work, and is looking forward to taking part to raise money for the organisation.

“We will be cheering Brendan on all the way, he has worked so hard and we are proud of his achievements.

“At Outreach 3 Way we encourage community participation and inclusion and taking part in this run will only enhance Brendan’s involvement in the community.”

Outreach 3 way is part of Dimensions, a national organisation that supports people with learning disabilities and people with autism.

Brendan has already raised about £150. Anybody who would like to sponsor Brendan can do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/BrendanCookes-5K.
