Man threatens to jump from bridge on M23

A man who threatened to jump from a bridge in Pound Hill was talked down by police officers in the early hours of today (Monday December 3).

The M23 was closed in both directions after the man climbed on to the bridge in Copthorne Road, Pound Hill, which straddles junction 10 of the motorway.

Police attended the scene at 10pm and spent two and a half hours talking to the man before he was brought back to the safe side of the bridge’s barrier at 12:30am.

The man was not hurt.

The motorway was reopened shortly afterwards.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “The emergency services appreciate the patience and understanding of drivers who were delayed and inconvenienced while the incident was safely resolved.”

A 20-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of wasting police time and for assessment under the Mental Health Act.
