Man to climb mountain for cancer charity
A man will climb more than 20,000ft in a bid to raise funds for charity when he tackles the summit of Island Peak in the Himalayas.
Jason Couchman, who grew up in Crawley, will fly out to Kathmandu on Tuesday (October 16) before transferring to the Himalayas on October 19.
He will spend 14 days trekking the mountain before strapping on his snow boots and preparing to march across the glacier and mountain ridge towards the summit.
Jason will be fundraising for Macmillan after his grandfather was diagnosed with cancer.
The fund raiser is no stranger to challenges having completed a bike ride from John O’Groats to Lands End in April.
Jason also cycled to Paris with friends from London, and dreams of cycling across America one day.
But before that, Jason has a rather big mountain to climb.
He said: “On summit day we will start walking at 1am through the night before we reach the Imja Glacier, also known as crampon point where we prepare to trek towards the eventual summit. It will be a very long day, potentially not finishing until 6pm.
“The mountain is four times bigger than Ben Nevis which I’ve never climbed.
“I’m feeling very excited, but also apprehensive and nervous as it’s a completely unknown challenge for me, when I’m cycling, I’m very confident, but for this challenge I really wanted to go out of my comfort zone.
“ The bike ride was very successful, that finished on the last weekend of April, and then in June I officially signed up to climb the mountain. I was getting itchy feet with no challenge to look forward to
“On the bike ride we raised over £6,500 – I really want to get us much as I can in tribute to my Granddad.”
