Market suspended over council concerns
THE Farmers’ Market which has been a regular monthly feature in the town centre has been suspended because of concerns Crawley Borough Council has with the way it is operated.
The number of traders who set up shop in Queens Square on the second Sunday of each month has been erratic, with shoppers often faced with only a handful of stalls on one occasion and then a bustling market the next.
Shoppers who headed into town last Sunday (September 9) were disappointed when no stalls were set up, despite the market being promoted by the council.
Ben Krol contacted the Observer after seeing the market advertised on our website.
He said: “This sounded appealing to me and my family so we ventured into town for 10am on Sunday, to see nothing!
“With paying for the car park and travelling into town especially for this I was very disappointed to see it was not on and that there had been no update to let us know of this.”
A council spokesperson said: “We are always looking at ways to improve the shopping offer in the town centre.
“The Farmers’ Market has been suspended while we try and clarify a number of concerns we have with its operation.
“We are trying to schedule a meeting with the market operator and we hope that an improved farmers’ market will trade in Queens Square in the near future.
““We will not be disclosing our concerns until we have met with the market operator.”
One market that will be in Queens Square this month is the World Village market, which will arrive on Thursday (September 20) and stay until Sunday (September 23).
It last visited the town in May and will offer gift ideas and food from around the world.
Other markets lined up by the borough council are: Italia in Piazza on October 26/27, continental market on November 8-10 November, the European gift market from November 15-18 and the craft market on December 1.
