Members’ interests revealed online

THE interests of all members of Crawley Borough Council have been published online.

The council pledged to publish all members’ details within 28 days of its code of conduct being adopted at the end of July.

A debate over the publication of members’ interests has been going on for some years with the leading Conservative group voting not to publish online in 2009.

At the time members argued the information could be used by criminals.

But as part of the Localism Act 2011 the council adopted a new code of conduct which obliges all members’ details to be posted online

The register must include employment details, expenses, contracts with the council, land ownership and shares over £25,000.

Councillors must also detail their membership of organisations, public authorities, trade unions and charities, and any hospitality gifts. A hardcopy version of the register can be viewed at the Town Hall.
