More on-call fire crew are needed as full time jobs go

More on-call firefighters are needed after a reduction in full time staff.

Retained firefighters are trained people who live within four minutes of a retained fire station and can make themselves available on-call to attend emergencies.

Steve Burns, a crew manager at Crawley Fire Station, explained that these crew members were more important than ever as the number of full time staff on watch would be reduced from April 2013, due to budget cuts.

The retained station, which holds a 4x4 vehicle and an engine, is at the station, in Ifield Avenue.

The initial training to become a retained firefighter is two weeks long, with ongoing training and many additional training programmes which can be taken to build on skills.
