A mother walked on fire to help find a cure for her daughter’s life controlling disease.

Nicola Pole, 43, from Langley Green, walked over red hot embers with 52 other parents of children with diabetes.

The supply teacher set up the event in aid of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, in Amesbury, and has raised more than £400.

The challenge came about after she joked with friends about what she would be willing to do in order to find a cure for the disease which her 12-year-old daughter Katie has.

Nicola said: “It all started when I met some people in the summer and they asked what I would do to find a cure for type one diabetes and one person said ‘I’d walk across fire’.”

The mother-of-two described how it felt to walk across temperatures of around 800 degrees Centigrade.

She said: “I was so nervous before. When I looked across it, I thought ‘oh I can’t do this’ but afterwards it was incredible. We had just two hours to train on the day to get ourselves into the mind frame of ‘I can do this’.”

Nicola described how the disease has taken over her family’s life, having to constantly check blood sugar levels and give insulin injections.

She said: “It affects everything we do. It’s with us 24 hours a day. In the middle of the night I’m getting up and checking her blood sugar levels.

“If her blood sugar level drops too low, she can die over night. Katie can eat the same food two days in a row and her blood sugar levels can be completely different so we constantly have to check.”

Nicola explained the difference between the two types of diabetes.

She said: “Type one diabetes in an auto immune response so there’s nothing we did that caused her to have it.

“There are lots of reports and horror stories about type two diabetes which is related to health and weight but Katie’s has nothing to do with that. When you hear a report about type two diabetes and you know your child’s going to go to school and get teased for her condition, it’s upsetting.”
