A sum of £4million has been put aside for a new Church of England primary school in Horley due to be open in September next year.
Surrey County Council is investing the cash as part of wider plans to boost the number of primary school places across the county. The new school would be on land south of Brookfield Drive and east of Lake Lane in the new Acres housing estate near Langshott.
The county council submitted the planning application to Reigate and Banstead Borough Council earlier this month and the Diocese of Southwark has confirmed it will be running the one form entry school with a 26 place pre-school after a lengthy bidding process.
A Surrey County Council spokesman said: “We have experienced a big rise in demand for places at our excellent schools and this surge is continuing, which is why we have embarked on Surrey’s biggest ever schools expansion programme to create the 16,000 places we need to find to ensure every child gets the best possible education.
“We are planning to invest more than £4million in a new Church of England one form entry primary school in north east Horley from September 2014.
“The plan is for the school to admit one class of 30 reception children in the first year and grow by one class per year to 210 pupils by September 2020.”
The spokesman added that they had confirmed to the Diocese of Southwark that it supported the proposal for the church to be the supplier.
A spokesman for the Diocese of Southwark said: “The Southwark Diocesan Board of Education has recently had its proposal for a new Church of England school in north-east Horley confirmed by Surrey County Council.
“The Diocesan Board of Education is delighted to have the opportunity to open a new CofE school to serve the local community and is working closely with the county council to open the school in September next year.”
The planning application being considered by the borough council includes pedestrian accesses from Brookfield Drive and Lake Lane and states the school hall will be open for community use outside the normal school day.
