Crawley’s fourth annual festival of words has a packed calendar to offer those with a love of literature.
Organisers of WORDfest, which launches this week, have planned two and a half weeks of open mic nights, book swaps, theatre shows and more, all around the town.
WORDfest is a voluntary festival run by local artists, writers, poets, performers, businesses, members of Crawley Library and Crawley Borough Council.
The festival, which will run from today (April 23) until Saturday May 10 will provide events for people who love to read, write, listen to music and attend performances and exhibitions.
Graphics designer and artist, Jo Harrison, 33, from Southgate, helped organise the festival.
She said: “We’re dead chuffed with this year’s list of events. We have a great line up.
“The aim of the festival is to add to Crawley’s cultural programme from a wordy perspective, not a conventional literary festival but one where those of us that run it hope to share the things we enjoy with our community.
“I love WORDfest because I get to really be immersed in enjoying creativity during planning and the actual festival.
“I get to work with our amazing committee, meet lots of new people and the whole atmosphere is really welcoming and lovely.
“Authors and performers that come along always say how welcome they’ve been made to feel by the Crawley audience. I feel proud to be a part of it all.”
This year’s festival will kick off tonight (April 23) with a launch at the Crawley Library.
The event will provide book giveaways and an open mic.
On April 25 there will be a book swap with authors Julia Crouch and Lucy Anne Holmes – also founder of the No More Page 3 campaign – at Revive Charity Shop in The Broadway, from 7.30pm.
Graphic novelists Dr Ian Williams and Nicola Streeten and creative director of Myriad Editions Corinne Pearlman will lead a discussion on medicine in graphic novels at Crawley Library on April 28.
There will be a quiz night at the library on May 2 and a stand-up comedy night at Brothers Coffee House, Brighton Road, on May 4.
Poets Dean Atta, Deanna Rodger, Hollie McNish, Sabrina Mahfouz and Paul Cree will host a poetry and open mic night on May 9.
Many other events will be taking place.
